Teerath Majumder
Composer | Sound Artist
Bangladeshi composer, sound artist, and technologist Teerath Majumder gives rise to unique sonic experiences using a blend of acoustic and electronic sounds in malleable social spaces. His 2025 production Do Not Feed the Robots invited audience members to reflect on their relationship with modern artificial intelligence through a participatory experience involving ‘interactive objects’ and automatons. In 2022, he created Space Within that also engaged audience members in collaboration with featured musicians to give rise to an hour-long soundscape. He is currently developing a practice involving tabla, electronics and neural networks.
Majumder has a penchant for collaboration. One of his current projects—Dysnomia—features NYC-based James Ilgenfritz, where they extend the possibilities of a double bass with an extended feedback network of transducers and a neural network. Previously, he has worked with composer and sound artist Nicole Mitchell on Mothership Calling (2021)—an immersive sound installation using Dolby Atmos created for the Mothership: Voyage into Afrofuturism exhibit at Oakland Museum of California. His work with choreographers and media artists forms a significant part of his oeuvre.
In his studio work, Majumder adopts a playful approach towards genre. For instance, Dust to Dust (2026) fluctuates between noise, EDM, ambient sounds, and electronica while Mouno Shonchar (2021) blends creative sound design with Bangla traditional music. Hints of progressive metal and jazz can be found in Panchil Topke (2020). His studio output has been described as “complex and impressive worlds on top of an unstable strata of contradictions.” (The Wire Magazine)
Majumder’s compositions and sound art have been presented on national and international platforms including the Seoul International Computer Music Festival, Reembodied Sound, International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression, International Computer Music Conference, and Society for Electroacoustic Music in the United States National Conference. Renowned ensembles such as Hub New Music, Transient Canvas, and London Firebird Orchestra have played his pieces.
Majumder holds a PhD in Integrated Composition, Improvisation and Technology from the University of California, Irvine and serves as an Assistant Professor at Columbia College Chicago.
